Fiber Optic Fusion Splicer
A fiber optic fusion splicer is a device that uses an electric arc to melt two optical fibers together at their end faces, to form a single fiber. The resulting join, or fusion splice, permanently joins the two glass fibers end to end, so that optical light signals can pass from one fiber into the other with very little loss. The splice should be as strong as the original fiber and have a transparent connection with minimal reflectivity.
Here's how fusion splicing works:
• The fiber ends are prepared and cleaved • The ends are placed in alignment fixtures on the splicer • The splicer uses electrodes to heat the fiber ends, then brings them together and fuses them
The heat can come from an electric arc, laser, or gas flame. Fusion splicing is often used in the field, and a skilled operator can splice up to 150 fibers per day. Because of this, fusion splicers often have batteries that can run continuously for at least six hours or can be heated more than 150 times.
PSI offers Fusion Splicers from a number of manufacturers including AFL / Fujikura, OFS / Furukawa and our own branded splicer, the PSI-SPLCER-500.
